Avatar in a nutshell

While Avatar may be Cameron's best work so far and employs extremely good use of new/cutting edge technology for the animation, it will not win best picture. However, the story of human greed and the pattern of destroying the environment/civilizations holds a lot of truth is the most important aspect of the message the movie provided to me. The lovey-dovey stuff is given, nothing new there. That is my review of Avatar in a nutshell.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

To all viewers, readers, subscribers and lurkers out there who follow me through various online streams (Posterous, Facebook, Twitter, Blog), this one is for you.

Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year to you all!

Let this quote from Nelson Mandela Foundation inspire you to embrace people more and spread the message of Love to each and every person you meet or interact with both online and offline.

"No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."

Attention Rogers HTC Magic / Dream Users

If you are an existing (or new) Rogers customer using the HTC Magic / Dream devices, this is important for you to know. You should be aware of the fact that both the HTC Magic and Dream run Android 1.5. While both these devices are stable and great, they will not be updated to Android 1.6 or 2.0 officially neither from Rogers nor from HTC.

For more information on this, read the following thread: http://is.gd/5sOn9

In a nutshell, neither Rogers nor HTC are willing to own up and provide and updated Android OS for the aforementioned devices. How does this affect you? Well there are plenty of apps being released on the Android Market which require you to have Android 1.6 to function. Moreover, new features such as Voice Dialing, Google Googles and numerous others will not be available to you, because our provider does not think these updates are relevant. Rogers, as always knows what their customers want/need.

For the time being, since we're not going to get either 1.6 or 2.0, our only alternative to experience the new features are to rely on after-market (hacked) ROM images. One such image is the Droid 2.0 image which was ported to the 32A (Magic). This ROM can be found here, http://is.gd/5tlPz

Not relying on Rogers and their poor judgement (or lack there of), I've opted to install this ROM and not be left behind in the core and advanced capabilities made possible by Android 2.0.

I am a strong proponent of using the right and most relevant technology, Android is no different. Rogers just doesn't seem to think it is relevant at all. Hopefully in the coming months Google's Nexus One device  is made available in Canada and hopefully Google will not sign a deal with Rogers to bring it to the Canadian consumers. This will be a BIG step in the RIGHT direction.

Until such time, I along with many other Rogers Magic/Dream users will await the expiration of our contracts and unwillingness to renew the contract going forward.

Rogers selling smartphones for $0.99....

At first I thought there was something wrong, but this seems to be real. Rogers is selling these phones for $0.99 on a select 3-year term. This is how they compete against WIND Mobile? Seriously?

*shocked*

Google Public DNS

Google today announced a new Public DNS service for all to use. The goal of the service is to provide a faster and much secure browsing experience. The cost of the service, $0. The Google Public DNS (GPD) servers are available all around the world, routing the traffic to the closest DNS server. For all of you who want to jump on the GPD bandwagon (myself included) keep in mind the following points:

1) The service is experimental and you should always have a backup service which you can use (such as OpenDNS or your ISPs DNS).

2) The service is meant strictly for individual users, while companies or small ISPs can use the service (theoretically), but they should always make sure that the users have a backup DNS service available.

3) If you are like me and using OpenDNS, keep in mind that you can use both GPD and OpenDNS together. My experiment this evening will involve setting GPD as my primary DNS and OpenDNS as secondary DNS.

4) If you are running a wired or wireless router in your house, your router admin page should have settings which allow you to specify custom DNS settings for primary and secondary DNS.

Cheers and Safe Browsing!

Taking GO Transit for the very first time

Over the weekend, I moved into my new place in Etobicoke (map:
http://tinyurl.com/etobicoke ). Today being my first day back to work after
the move, I decided to take the GO Transit (url: http://gotransit.com) in
to work, for the very first time. At my previous place of residence the
only viable option for me was to rely on the TTC (url: http://ttc.ca). Over
the past three years of relying on the TTC made me realize how unreliable
it had become.

Needless to say, my first experience taking the GO Train was a pleasant
one. The ride took anywhere between 7-10 minutes. Although I got to the
station way too early, I found out that the number of parking spaces at the
Mimico station is extremely limited with many spots set aside for "reserved
parking" only. Not sure who they are reserved for, but my guess would be
for monthly pass holders. Other than that, it was clear to me just from
observation that the number of spots are going to be less if I were to try
and catch the 7:52 AM train. The train which I must catch, in order to get
to work on time and more importantly to be able to find a parking spot, is
the 7:32 AM train.

With that begins my new journey being one of the many GO Train commuters.

The pseudo-end of Living 1.0

Three years ago, I moved out of my parents` house and moved into a brand new two-bedroom apartment. Moving on my own gave me a whole new perspective on life, relationships, responsibilities, freedom and choice. While living with my parents, I had very little in terms of responsibilities and with a career which consisted of constant travelling, things were pretty laid back.

Looking back at the three years which I spent in this place, they are filled with fun memories of having friends and family over and having a good time. It also allowed for me to do what I want, when I want, and how I want. All in all it was great living. The first year I did not make the most use of the place, due to constant travelling for work. But I was able to enjoy the place on the weekends and eventually was able to make the most out of it once I settled down and got a new job which involved no travelling.

This living, which I am going to version as 1.0, will come to an end exactly one week today. On November 28th, I will move into a new place which my fiance and I purchased for us to start our new life.

While the previous journey comes to and end, I look forward for a brand new journey to begin taking shape.

Rogers "High-Speed Internet", not so high-speed!

The past few months, I have raised hell with #Rogers about their crappy service, both with their wireless and cable internet offerings. I subscribe to both and in the coming months am going to make the switch to another provider who can provide a consistent level of service for the @#$% load of money I pay them.

Here are three tests which I carried out this evening to with speedtest.net. During each of these tests, there was no network activity on my home network, apart from me carrying out the test and posting the results to: 1) twitter and 2) writing this blog post through posterous.com.

Now folks, let us compare the three tests carried out above with the actual service which Rogers advertises on their website. The following screenshot was taken from http://is.gd/4ZlSB.

Note the service which I subscribe to is their "High-Speed Extreme" service which promises 10.0Mbps download and up to 1.0Mbps upload speeds. Comparing those with the tests carried out above, you decide who has "The most reliable network" in Canada.

Cheers!
